Moving through Creative Blocks

Creative blocks are something that all of us as creatives will come up against at some point.

What do creative blocks look like for you?  How do you overcome them?

For me, it’s often about not being able to begin because I’m too worried that the end result will just be rubbish.

Creative blocks can look like:

  • Lack of motivation

  • Unsettled mood

  • An inability to start/fear of the blank page

Possible causes of creative blocks could be:

  • The dreaded comparisonitis!

  • ‘Busy-ness’ and long to-do lists

  • Multiple distractions

  • Looming deadlines

  • Tired/stressed/overworked

A few tips I often turn to to help when I feel a bit blocked are:

  • Getting outside and breathing deeply, slowly and gently

  • Going for a walk or moving my body, preferably outside

  • Turning off my phone and/or the alerts

  • Just writing…anything!

  • Experimenting with a different medium with which to create e.g. drawing instead of writing, dancing instead of designing (or vice versa!)

  • Using one of my own prompts from my Instagram or podcast!

Generally though, getting my body outside and doing some free writing never fails to sort my head out and, although I am still finding getting started on a couple of things a challenge, consistent practice seems to be helping my confidence a lot.

I hope that’s helped!

Happy writing!  Helen x
